Description

Gear cables are the unsung workhorses of a well-tuned drivetrain. The Alligator 31 Strands X-long Gear Inner Cable offers precision-braided construction designed to handle India's demanding mix of monsoon humidity, dust-laden roads, and punishing heat — keeping your shifts crisp whether you're grinding up the Western Ghats or navigating Pune's potholed back roads. Cobbled Climbs is the exclusive Indian distributor for Campagnolo in India.

Use Cases

Daily training. Reliable use across Indian training conditions — heat, humidity, and rough tarmac.

Race day. Performance-grade construction for competitive efforts.

Long rides. Built for full-day rides across Western Ghats, Sahyadri, or Nilgiri climbs.

Our Take

At Rs. 490, this is one of the smartest maintenance spends you can make. Indian conditions — think Chennai humidity, Delhi dust, and Lonavala descents under monsoon rain — eat through cables faster than European riders ever experience. Alligator's 31-strand construction distributes tension evenly, resisting kinking and fraying through extended service. A fresh inner cable brings back that new-bike shifting feel, and at this price, there's no reason to defer the job.

Sizing for Indian Riders

This is an X-long cable, making it particularly suited to bikes with longer cable runs — think full-suspension MTBs, touring setups, or frames where the rear derailleur cable takes a wide routing path. Confirm your existing cable length before ordering. The X-long spec handles most frame sizes generously, with excess trimmed to fit during installation.

Compatibility Notes

Compatible with standard mechanical derailleur groupsets across road and MTB applications — Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo mechanical systems. Not intended for electronic (Di2, AXS, EPS) drivetrains. Check your shifter's end-tip requirement (standard barrel or SP40 ferrule) before installation. Replace cable housing if worn or kinked for best shifting performance. Suitable for 10, 11, and 12-speed mechanical setups.

Pairs Well With

Complete the service with gear cable outer housing for a full cable refresh, a quality wet-condition chain lubricant for monsoon riding, a chain wear checker to assess drivetrain health, and handlebar tape if routing cables through the bars. A multi-tool with cable cutters makes installation straightforward at home.

Fitting

This cable is designated X-long, making it ideal for bikes that require longer rear derailleur cable runs — full-suspension mountain bikes, touring or gravel bikes, and road frames with external full-length cable routing. During installation, route fully and trim the excess to your required length using quality cable cutters. If you ride a compact road frame with short internal routing, measure your existing cable first to confirm X-long is appropriate. When in doubt, excess length is always preferable to a cable that runs short.

The Story Behind The Brand

Alligator has been engineering precision cycling cables and housing systems for over three decades, earning a reputation among mechanics worldwide for consistent quality and broad compatibility. Their cables are a go-to choice for workshop builds and home mechanics who want reliable shifting without overpaying for premium-branded alternatives.
