Description
The Shimano M70ct4 (Severe) Brake Shoes are rim brake pads designed for demanding conditions — wet descents, heavy braking zones, and sustained mountain riding where standard compounds start to fade. At Rs. 810, they offer a meaningful upgrade for riders who put real kilometres on rim-brake mountain bikes across India's varied terrain. Cobbled Climbs is the authorised retailer for Time in India.
Use Cases
Daily training. Stiff sole and breathable upper for repeated training in Indian heat and humidity.
Race day. Power transfer and snug retention for competitive efforts.
Indoor training. Compatible with indoor trainer cleats for structured Zwift, TrainerRoad, or Wahoo SYSTM workouts.
Our Take
For riders tackling the Western Ghats, Ooty climbs, or the rolling descents around Coorg and Lonavala on rim-brake mountain bikes, pad compound matters enormously. The M70ct4 (Severe) designation signals a harder compound built for extended braking loads — exactly what sustained Ghat descents demand. In India's monsoon months, when rims stay wet for hours at a time, a severe-compound shoe maintains bite far better than a standard pad. A smart, affordable upgrade.
Sizing for Indian Riders
These are rim brake shoes, so disc brake bikes are not compatible — confirm your bike runs V-brakes or cantilever rim brakes before ordering. The M70ct4 fits standard Shimano MTB brake holders. European sizing conventions do not apply here; instead, verify your existing brake shoe holder type matches Shimano's standard MTB cartridge format. When in doubt, note the existing pad model printed on the holder.
Compatibility Notes
The M70ct4 (Severe) is designed for alloy rims only — never use on carbon rims, where incompatible compounds generate dangerous heat. These pads suit Shimano MTB V-brake and cantilever caliper systems. Confirm your brake holder accepts standard cartridge-style replacement shoes. Clean rims with isopropyl alcohol before fitting; oil or tyre sealant contamination drastically reduces braking performance and cannot be fully reversed.
Pairs Well With
Consider pairing with fresh brake cables and housing for consistent lever feel, a quality alloy rim suited to severe-compound pads, bar-end or inline cable adjusters for on-the-fly tuning on long descents, and a cable-pull torque check tool for precise brake setup before heading out on hilly rides.
