Sm-sh12 Road Cleats

The Shimano SM-SH12 Road Cleats are the yellow, 6-degree float option in Shimano's SPD-SL system — the standard choice for road cyclists seeking a balance between knee-friendly movement and efficient power transfer. At Rs. 1,400, they are an accessible yet essential component for any SPD-SL setup, from Mumbai's coastal commutes to long weekend climbs in the Western Ghats.

Use Cases

Daily training. Stiff sole and breathable upper for repeated training in Indian heat and humidity.

Race day. Power transfer and snug retention for competitive efforts.

Indoor training. Compatible with indoor trainer cleats for structured Zwift, TrainerRoad, or Wahoo SYSTM workouts.

Our Take

For Indian road riders who spend hours in the saddle — whether grinding up the Ghats near Pune and Lonavala, or logging early-morning kilometres in Delhi's summer heat — the SM-SH12's 6-degree float is the sensible default. It gives your knees enough lateral movement to stay comfortable over long distances while maintaining confident engagement. This is the cleat we'd recommend to most riders before suggesting anything more restrictive.

Sizing for Indian Riders

These cleats are not sized by foot size but by shoe compatibility. The SM-SH12 uses Shimano's 3-bolt SPD-SL pattern, fitting shoes with a standard road cleat mount. In India's heat — riding at 35°C+ in Chennai, Hyderabad, or Ahmedabad — feet can swell slightly, so ensure your shoe fit has already accounted for this before finalising cleat position. A properly set cleat position prevents hot spots and fatigue.

Compatibility Notes

The SM-SH12 is compatible exclusively with Shimano SPD-SL pedals (such as PD-R series and PD-105 series) and shoes with a 3-bolt road cleat mount. They are not compatible with 2-bolt SPD systems or Look Kéo pedals. Replace cleats once the wear indicator (the yellow plastic) shows significant erosion, typically every 10,000–15,000 km or annually for frequent riders. Monsoon grit from Indian roads can accelerate wear — rinse the cleat interface periodically.

Pairs Well With

Complete your drivetrain contact setup by pairing the SM-SH12 with Shimano SPD-SL road pedals, a quality pair of road cycling shoes with a 3-bolt mount, cleat shims or wedges for knee alignment, and a cleat installation tool or 4mm hex key for precise positioning.
